Bio: The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation appointed Frank Rijsberman Ph.D as its first Director of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in October 2010. In 2011 he was responsible for ramping up grantmaking for this new sanitation-focused strategy and he led the development of a science and technology initiative under the banner of “Reinventing the Toilet”. Prior to this in 2007, he joined the start-up management team of Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google as a Director. He led grantmaking in the public health initiative in 2008/9 and was responsible for programs and partnerships in health, disaster response, geo-informatics and climate change adaptation. From 2000-2007, Rijsberman served as Director General of the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a leading research organization on water, food, and the environment with headquarters in Sri Lanka and offices throughout Africa and Asia. He was also a member of the Task Force on Water and Sanitation for the United Nations Millennium Development Goals Project, and one of the key organizers of the second World Water Forum. He served as a part-time professor at the UNESCO-IHE Institute of Water Education, the world’s largest facility dedicated to research and capacity-building in the fields of water, environment, and infrastructure. Originally from The Netherlands, Frank Rijsberman received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from the Delft University of Technology, and earned a multi-disciplinary Ph.D. in water resources planning and management and civil engineering from Colorado State University.
